Steen Heilesen :: Visit Sai Kung, N.T.

 Photos from Sai Kung.

Sai Kung is located on the east coast of Kowloon Peninsula.
By car it’s 45 minutesfrom the airport and by minibus it’s 30 minutes
from Mong Kok.
Still today many local Chinese find it’s inconvenient to go to Sai Kung.
They have visited Sai Kung 10 or 15 years ago and still don't know it's easy to come here.
Sai Kung is the place in HK where you will not find skyscrapers. In the centre of
Sai Kung there are some few 12 floor buildings.

In the week-ends there are many visitors in Sai Kung. Here you can escape from
the city and join tours to the small islands in the bay. You can visit the biggest
country park in HK, but be carefull -
read Hiking Hints here.
Don’t go there when the temperature is more than 30 degrees. You can easily get
a heatstroke. The coast on the east side is also dangerous and there are no
lifeguards or shark net.
South of Sai Kung you will find many beaches with lifeguards.

Sai Kung has many sea-food restaurants and most of them are located along the
harbour. You can also buy your sea-food directly from the boats between the pier
and the sea-food restaurants.

GST: Photo 8175 -> The dark side of Hong Kong. Why? Because all civil servants are paid much more than they are worth and got a lot of privileges and paying too little tax.
A modern nation can not have an economy like that and therefore the government now tries to introduce a GST in other countries called VAT, which will let the lower income groups pay for the rich so they can keep their privileges. If the government cuts away the privileges they don't need to introduce a new tax - that would be fair for all.
The 5% GST is not only 5% on all goods. The percentage will incrase every time there is a middleman involved.
The goverment don't even have the manpower or an effective IT-solution to check that all shopowners will pay the GST they collect.
I come from a country where everything is reported to the tax-department, but almost all shopowners put some of the VAT in their own pockets. This is not a taxation for a contry like HK where so many have a low income.
There is no fair way to control this kind of taxation.
No hope for the rag pickers :(
07-12-2006: The goverment has revoked the VAT proposal. :)
