Al-Azhar was founded in AD 970 as the main mosque and the centre of learning for the city. The university founded there is one of the world's oldest surviving educational institution. (after Fez University in Morocco) While ten thousand students once studied here, today university classes are conducted in adjacent buildings and the Mosque is reserved for prayer...

...Oh! no wonder why I didn't see any students there... initially thought that they all skived lessons like the Brits. :P

Entrance of the mosque of Al-Azhar and the 18th century double-arched Gate of the Barbers.
Through the Gate of the Barbers, there are two buildings. On the right is the library, and on the left is the mihrab.
The Qaitbay Entrance was built in 1469 and has a minaret built atop. This door leads to the inner courtyard of the mosque

Inside is a large sahn (courtyard) that is 275x112 ft which is surrounded with porticos supported by over three hundred marble columns of ancient origin.
The mosque had 6 minarets, only 3 remains now

The most unique and beautiful of all: minaret of al-Ghouri, built by Sultan al-Ghouri, 16th century.
