Vincent Poon :: Aswan and Around (18th-20th Apr 2007)
Laid-back and pleasant, Aswan is really a good place for a break after my desert trip. The hotels here are cheaper and nicer and even the local Egyptian merchants here are less aggressive than in Cairo. And most importantly, crossing the roads here is no longer mission impossible!

Shisha pipes and belly-dancer costumes
Nothern Quarries and the Unfinished Obelisk. Aswan quarries were Egypt's main source of granite stones
The unfinished obelisk is really a discarded obelisk because of a flaw found in the rock. At 42m and 1000+ tonnes, if finished, it would be the heaviest obelisk ever built. Shame~
Aswan High Dam and Lake Nasser. The Dam can provide half of Egypt's electricty. The lake is the largest artificial lake in the work.

Lotus-shaped tower was built to commemorate the Soviet Union's support in the building of the dam
Power generators of the dam
The Dam is 3,600 m in length, 980 m wide at the base, 40 m wide at the crest and 111 m tall. Becoz of its importance, it is under heavy security all the times.
