Vincent Poon :: Mosque of Amr Ibn al-Aas
This is the first and oldest mosque ever built on the land of Egypt (and Africa). Erected in 642 AD by Amr Ibn al'Aas, the commander of the Muslim army who conquered Egypt, the original, tiny mosque was built as a place for the army to worship. Since then it has undergone many restorations to become today's look.

Although not the most beautiful mosque I have seen, its red carpet against the white background still forms a striking image on my mind.

One of the 3 minarets of the mosque
The mosque is also quite huge (13,556,25 sq. m.) and therefore it is hard to get it all within one shot (even with my wide-angle lens!)
The pavement outside of the mosque is lit by lamp posts.

The fountain in the centre of the courtyard
I quite like the red carpet
Again, students are drawing the mosque
On the carpet are pre-marked praying areas, so they won't be unnecessarily overcrowded... neat!

Mihrab
The mosque has around 200 columns
Out of these 200, they say no two columns are the same...
But I can hardly tell the difference!
