Vincent Poon :: Masada (4-Sep)

Once used by Herod the Great, this 440m high mountain-top fortress was most famous for the Roman siege in 66AD when the revolting Jews captured this as the last stronghold for 2 years before fallen after all the remaining 1000 defenders committed a mass suicide rather than surrendering.

'Masada Shall Not fall Again' is now a swearing-in oath of the Israeli defense force (IDF)

This is one of the places to store water for the inhabitants to use... huge isn't it?
Finally climbing out of the Cistern
Southern Wall. Beyond that are cliffs.. No you can't go to that ridge. It is miles away on another mountain

Southern Citadel - the southernmost point of the fortress
Back down in the tourist complex is a very important place - a place where you could sit down and have a cool drink after the tiring and scorching walk over the site
T-shirts sold in the complex, some were actually quite funny, and some showed their pride as being Israelis (see the black T-shirt next to the camel)
The bus stop for my return journey, you'd better time yourself properly or risk standing there for half an hour at 40C

One highway (90) brings you all the way from Jerusalem to the southern tip of Israel (Eilat)
On the way back the bus broke down (engine overheated), everyone had to get off and wait. Most passengers were soldiers waiting to get home
While waiting, the religious Jews would take every opportunity to follow their praying ritual (sunset prayers?)
Finally another bus came along to pick us up. Too late I already missed my West Wall Tunnel tour.
