Vincent Poon :: Marrakesh (17-20 Oct)

My first taste of Morocco... first time to stay in a Riad, first to find my way out in Medina after dark, first time to taste couscous and Tajine... if you are only allowed time to stay in one place in Morocco, think no further!

Buy a kilo of dried dates and you get one of the recycle bags above
Djemaa El-Fna at night
Sunset at the rooftop of Cafe Des Epices
Album: Medina of Marrakesh

Marrakesh's Medina (old city) is the best in Morocco with enough alleyways for you to get lost with and yet enough souks to quench your thirst for shopping.

Album: Djemaa El-Fna

A vast square with more than 100 small restaurants and stalls, populated by snake charmers, herbalists and astrologers. It is not only a market, the whole place is a living world heritage.

Album: Rahba Kedima

Also known as "Old Square". Magicians and healers buy their supplies here... lots of herbs and potions and other stuff you don't and want to know.

Contains: 24 items.
Album: Palais Bahia

This late 1800s "Palace of the Favourite" spans across 8 hectares with 150+ rooms. Even though only a portion is opened to public, it already shows what the best craftsmen were capable of at that time.

A modern-looking girl in a traditional boys school
Open courtyard in the centre
Interior of the dome inside
Mausoleum of Ahmed el-Mansour
Album: Ali Ben Youssef Medersa

Founded in the 14th century, this Quranic learning centre was once the largest in North Africa and remains one of the most splendid. Well it was definitely more classy than my boarding school, if only it was mixed...

Album: Musee De Marrakesh

Originally a palace, became a girls' school and finally a museum. Contents include contemporary art and artifacts... I found the building itself much more interesting though.

Album: Koubba Ba'Adiyn

Part of a 12th century mosque that the Almoravid spared when they destroyed everything else their Almoravid predecessors built in Marrakesh

Album: Saadian Tombs

Attracted by Lonely Planet's description as "Anyone who says you can't take it with you hasn't seen the Saadian Tombs..." Well, really? Judge for yourselves...

So I choose Mixed grill brochettes (75 DHM) - the look was better than the taste
The courtyard is quite nice for an afternoon tea
Courtyard from above...
I should have taken this... at least I won't get lost in the Medina
Album: Food of Marrakesh

First taste to Moroccan Food like couscous, tajine, skewers (?) and not to mention the Moroccan McDonald's and the Moroccan Coke!

Album: Riad Suliman and Mellah

Nice hotel at a very cheap price. Location again is the problem... I arrived in Mellah on my very first night and without a map nor any signs, even I was a bit uneasy, though $$$ could always solve the problem at the end.

Album: Dar Zouar and Bab Taghzout

A nice Riad that offers tranquility and comfort at a reasonable cost. The catch is that it is located far from the popular tourist places... the good side is if you can find you way back from Djemaa El-Fna at night, then basically you can survive any Moroccan medina.

Album: Marrakesh's Miscellaneous

The bits and pieces of Marrakesh, yeah... mostly the transports
