Vincent Poon :: Ports of Call - Messina, Mt. Etna & Taormina

Messina was the first port of call in our trip; it was also the first time I set foot in Sicily and also the first time I climbed an active volcano. In fact it is the largest in Europe... boy, aren't you excited?

What we got at the end was a crater that even the old people can climb and finish in minutes, and also a beautiful medieval town if not spoilt by the heavy rain storm...

The complete view of the northern crater after the fog was gone
The trail of people trying to climb the northern crater... those were ski lifts at the back
It was a lot steeper compared to the southern crater
and coming down was not easy, see how the woman struggled...

Most of the volcanic soil (formed by ashes and lava) is rich for vegetation, that's why lots of farmers are not willing to leave Mt. Etna
Another type of smokiness, but this one is more welcome. Shame that the tour did not include any lunches.
This is one of the bar restaurant at Rifugio Sapienza
Inside you can find food, drinks, souvenirs and most importantly the toilet! (and the queues)

Lots of exotic alcohol served if you fancy them (see those in red?!)
The tour included a glass of freshly squeezed? orange juice (it came with orange seed!) and a cannoli (Sicilian pastry dessert)
If you are disappointed of not being able to see any lava up there, then hopefully these photos will give you something to remember with.
or you can buy a postcard or two outside the restaurant
