Vincent Poon :: Episode VI: The Return of the Weary Travellers

Day 3, after watching the sunrise in Ksar Ghilane, we drove out of the desert to the mountains. The scorching heat continued and we were also given a flat tyre before we reached Chenini the mountain village. Granaries came next though I must admit they were worth visiting. Last stop was in Matmata where we had lunch (at 1500) and also visited the underground Berber cave house. (a must for Star Wars fans)

The last part of the journey was a 6 hours drive all the way north to Sousse. The other jeep had the aircon broken so they were literally soaked. Oh and we missed the famous El-Jem because we got back home at around 2300!

After a sleepless night (first it was too hot, then it was so noisy... seems like sleeping inside a wildlife safari zoo), this was the state of our tent in the next morning. There was a flap on each side of the tent that you could open for ventilation (or for other wild animals to come in.. your choice!)
As you might have noticed in the previous pic, there was light bulb. Indeed this place was solar polared... they even offered a socket for each tent to charge your own stuff... how thoughtful! (The electricity ran out in the late evening though)
This was the place for toilets and showers, there were lights, hot water and flushing water, and it was clean! What more could you ask for in the middle of the desert?
There were like 5 to 6 tents for Paradise Camp. As you could see each tent can sleep 5-6 people..

For breakfast we had a wide selection of an evil smiling oreo-like biscuits, fig jam, butter, sugar cube, bread and coffee... Tea was on special request only!
After the quick breakfast we immediately hurried ourselves to the dunes to catch the sunrise
The whole Ksar Ghilane was shared by many campsites, some were more luxurious than ours (private bungalows!!) This campsite decided to use an interesting mascot as a sign post...
This natural thermal pool was also shared too, it would be nice to have a swim here to enjoy the nature of beauty...

... if you didn't mind the amount of algae in the water... (well it seems that person didn't mind at least!) To be honest I would have tried if we arrived here earlier yesterday..
This were the red sand dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental, these were the reasons we travelled so deep into Sahara. We should have taken a camel ride to be fully immersed in the emptiness and tranquility of the Sahara desert
While waiting for the sunrise, we looked at the treks caused by different animals during the night... except the possibility of maybe a lizard we had no ideas what the others were...
Now these looked like the footprints of the fenix foxes
