Vincent Poon :: Episode VI: The Return of the Weary Travellers

Day 3, after watching the sunrise in Ksar Ghilane, we drove out of the desert to the mountains. The scorching heat continued and we were also given a flat tyre before we reached Chenini the mountain village. Granaries came next though I must admit they were worth visiting. Last stop was in Matmata where we had lunch (at 1500) and also visited the underground Berber cave house. (a must for Star Wars fans)

The last part of the journey was a 6 hours drive all the way north to Sousse. The other jeep had the aircon broken so they were literally soaked. Oh and we missed the famous El-Jem because we got back home at around 2300!

The sun finally came out at around 620am. The first and only sunrise we saw in Tunisia
After watching the sunrise we left Ksar Ghilane for Chenini. Not long after the tyre went flat for the other jeep
Even the tyre of the 4WD cannot survive from the road conditions after 3 days drive...
Our driver was changing tyre for the other jeep... luckily that didn't happen while we were lost on the first night

It seems these people had found a good way to entertain themselves while this happened - playing lawn bowling with stones
Finally we arrived to the mountain area
Somehow we had to do the hiking up. The destination was the white tower on the photo's top left.
We saw some sheep on the way up. Seems after all it wasn't as deserted as I thought..

Finally we saw this signpost... another 100m to Chenini!
We believed we have reached our destination when we saw this beautiful white mosque. Nearby was a cafe where we chilled out with a cup of coffee (or in our case a bottle of coke)
Chenini, the best known of the mountain villages, was built between two hilltop ridges.
The oldest structures dated back to 12th century and was originally a fortified granary (see the holes?) built on a hilltop to store grain for the villagers living in the valley below.
