Vincent Poon :: Medina

Medina (the old city) is a distinct city section found in many North African cities. It is typically walled, with many narrow and maze-like streets. They were designed to confuse and slow down invaders (and tourists alike) because of how narrow and winding the alleys were.

A trip to a North African city is never complete if you don't go there to get lost or to haggle with the local merchants. Although not as lively as Marrakesh's and not as ancient or as massive as Fes', it still has its own unique character there.

This is the eastern gateway to the medina - Bab Bhar. Used to be part of the old city wall but now a huge freestanding arch after the French had knocked down the walls
Right behind Bab Bahr is now the 'Place de la Victorie'
Surrounding building in Place de la Victorie
The medina is a UNESCO heritage site

This was the map of the Medina. Didn't look as complicated as the one in Marrakesh... nevertheless you were bound to get lost anyway...
Everything in the medina led to or from the Zaytouna mosque, so I would use that to orientate myself, but that was just a naive thought. Getting lost in a medina was proven to be inevitable!
One of the many alleys inside the Medina. It rained yesterday so it was now demonstrating how the medieval drainage system worked.. quite interesting except the fact that I was wearing sandals
The medina were categorized in different souqs (marketS), each selling different products. Souq el Attarine here means the perfume maker's souq
