Vincent Poon :: Monastir

We went all the way to Monastir just to see the Ribat, which was the filming location of 'The Life of Brian'. The weather was bad at the beginning but it seems we had some good luck and the sun came out when we arrived. Alas, the luck did not last when we realized the Ribat was STILL under renovation (for years now).. Having no choice we decided to visit the mausoleum next door which turned out to be just as impressive..

This was the place where Habib Bourguiba (first Tunisian president) and his family was buried
This is a very elegant place with gold and green cupolas as well as a marble courtyard
as well as green tiled arches

The interior was impressive. There was a large crystal chandelier hanging on the top
The mihrab inside the mausoleum
Tomb of the unknown soldier
This modest octagonal structure is a symbolic grave for all Tunisian soldiers who fought for the freedom of their homeland

When we came out we noticed some camels had appeared. They were dressed up (wearing a hat) and their masters would ask for money for photos... poor things
Another working animal... this carriage was a lot nicer than the one we had in Nefta before.
On the way back to the train station we saw it again, it seems someone had employed its services.
Mini road trains for tourists. We saw a few in Sousse. These were good as alternatives to taxis and buses if you don't mind the speed and heat
