Lesser banded hornet (Vespa affinis) hunting flies around dead mussels on beach
The rotting mussels give off a strong odor and attract lots of flies. I initially assumed the hornets were eating the mussel flesh, but it soon became apparent they were only after the flies. They would even resort to lurking inside the shell to ambush flies.
