Vincent Poon :: Yad VaShem (2-Sep) & the New City

Yad VaShem, meaning 'a name and a place' (Isaiah 56:5) is the Jewish people’s living memorial to the Holocaust. The contents in the museum were so intense and powerful that even for an outsider like me felt deeply touched by what has happened to the Jews in WWII. I think anybody should pay a visit to this place to remind themselves the meaning of humanity and that we are all equal in this world.

To get to Yad VaShem or other places in Israel, you would need to take the bus at the central bus station. This is where I had the opportunity to walk around the New City of Jerusalem, which is actually quite modern!

That's right 2008 was 60th year anniversary of modern Israel though I did not see much celebration in the area. This is Mt. Herzl, the national cemetery
On the horizon is Jerusalem's new city, not as modernized as Tel Aviv, but definitely much 'newer' than the Old City
Finally found the path to Yad Vashem
After that sign it was still a long way to go...Should have got a taxi or at least find out where the shuttle was

Finally there - The first building was the visitors' centre, the pyramid-like pavilion behind was the Holocaust History Museum
The visitors' centre
It looks like this is a field trip for the cadets.

Security check point. After this point we could not take any pictures as a matter of respect. We could always check back the details on the official website.
The Pillar of Heroism commemorates Jewish resistance during the Holocaust.
The inscription on the concrete block reads: "Now and forever in memory of those who rebelled in the camps and ghettos, fought in the woods, in the underground and with the Allied forces; braved their way to Eretz Israel; and died sanctifying the name of God
Children's Memorial - a tribute to the approximately 1.5 million Jewish children who perished during the Holocaust. Walking through the memorial, the visitor will hear the names of murdered children, their ages and countries of origin in the background.
